What is ecommerce competitor monitoring in 2026?

The practice of tracking what every competitor brand changes across pricing, assortment, marketing, paid acquisition, organic search, AI-search visibility, agent readiness and customer experience. In 2026 the definition expanded to include how often a brand is cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and how readable the site is to buying agents.

Why this matters now

The competitor brief from 2024 will not cut it.

The way buyers find ecommerce brands is splitting in two. Google still drives a large share of traffic, but a fast-growing slice of high-intent searches now happens inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. The brands cited in those answers get bought. The brands not cited do not exist for that buyer.

There is a second shift underneath. Buying agents are starting to act for users at checkout: visiting sites, comparing prices, completing purchases. Whether your site is readable to those agents is a new dimension entirely, and it has its own scoring rubric in section 7.

The 2026 question is no longer "do you rank on Google" but "do you get cited by the model and reached by the agent". This playbook gives you a working framework for both.

"The 2026 question is no longer 'do you rank' but 'do you get cited'."

The 6-pillar Agent Readiness rubric

Score any site 0-100. The same rubric Trendos uses in production. Pillar weights add to 101 on purpose - schema and tech access get a slight overweight because they unlock everything else.

Who it is for

Built for in-house teams, not agencies.

Founders

You need a category map before you raise, hire, or ship. Run this once per quarter on each direct rival and you have the brief most decks bury under 60 slides.

Growth & Marketing

Build a competitor war room without spinning up a research vendor. Sections 1-4 give you the day-to-day moves. Section 6 tells you whether ChatGPT cites you.

Brand & eCommerce Directors

Stop running quarterly reviews from screenshots. The Agent Readiness rubric in section 7 is the same one Trendos uses to score sites in production today.
